The Good Guys: Dirk Brannigan

BDtR_186

Dirk Brannigan, the name will elicit praise as well exclamations of fury depending on what room one might be standing in at the time.  He is the defender of the Commonwealth and all that stands for justice, truth and the dispatching of supernatural evil everywhere.  His supporters can’t praise his actions and valour enough, whereas his enemies dream of a world which is free of Dirk Brannigan foiling their schemes.

He first came onto the scene in World War One, where he received the Victoria Cross for valour.  After being shot down over enemy lines, he managed to ditch his plane without injury.  Captain Brannigan took the Lewis Machine Gun from his broken Sopwitch Camel and then went on to capture an entire platoon of German Troops, including their map of all the mortar nests in the area.  Commenting on the entire situation, all Brannigan said was, “I hope no one takes out that Bastard the Red Baron before I can, that was my favourite plane.”  He was however foiled by a fellow Canadian, Billy Bishop, who shot down the Red Baron but Brannigan did his part by taking out other members of the Flying Circus when returned to the skies.

There is no doubt he was recruited into the SOE during the interwar years; it is during this time where he made many of his contacts including Agent Redshirt, Chip Cassidy and future Prime Minister George Pegg.  Most of his files from this time have been classified and very little is known what his missions entailed.  Nonetheless, he must have shown great distinction as he was considered a vital asset to the SOE.   It is rumoured that he headed up a top secret branch of the SOE that specifically dealt with supernatural incursions against Her Majesty’s Government.

Instead of taking to the skies in World War Two, Captain Brannigan was sent on special missions all over Europe, including to Stalingrad to stop the Zombie Invasion of Russia.  Agent Redshirt and Dirk Brannigan spent many weeks rallying the unders upplied Russian troops against the remenants of the German Army, now undead and hungry for flesh and brains.  From this action they were dubbed the Saviors of Stalingrad. Neither of them talked much about that time, and they only reported tactics and completed mission objectives in their sparse reports.   His valiant actions in the retaking of London from the zombie hoarde revitalized all the nations to remobilize and finally take back their countries from the undead menace.

In his latest mission Dirk is once again teamed up with Agent Redshirt – brought together for the first time since Stalingrad.  They will be deep behind the East German lines to combat another growing threat to the Commonwealth and democracy – that of Communism.

The Baddies: Leon Trotsky

The history of the Russian Revolution and it’s principle players have been poured over for the last century.  Trotsky had his part to play and then, was ousted from mainstream communist politics during the power struggle with Stalin.

However, what history tells us is not always the entire truth.  In 1940 the Communist party supposedly assassinated Trotsky in Mexico.  The real reason for this assassination was his growing power in the dark arts, and especially his influence on vampires.  However, the assassination was clumsy and not done with the most effective means of killing a vampire.

Trotsky regrouped from this staggering event, becoming more radical and recruiting those from the Communist ranks – even those well-known in Moscow.   The SOE lists him as a high threat but do not know his whereabouts or what he may do; further radicalization is assumed.

Rumours have him relocating to either the United States or Europe to make a power play for one of the governments.  Some people his intention is to aim for the heart of capitalism and tear it out, replacing it with Communist principles as interpreted by him and those he trusts.

A letter was intercepted from Mexico to Moscow shortly after his assassination attempt:

“Revolution will come.  It will be violent if necessary for the proletariat is dazzled and deceived by baubles vomited forth by the factories of the Capitalist plagued nations.  We are here to open their eyes, usher forth a new age of prosperity.  We shall feed upon the capitalists and their cohorts; our energy will flow when their blood runs freely from their veins.”

Most democratic nations have him on an assassination on sight list and are actively seeking his whereabouts, believing him a serious threat to their way of life.

The Good Guys: Prime Minister Catherine Harker

Name: Catherine Harker
Alias: The Silver Lady
Age: 25
Political Affiliation: Post WoZ Labour-Liberal
Known Associates: SOE section chief, Dirk Brannigan, SOE special Agent Ms Simons

As the youngest Prime Minister since William Pitt the Younger, Prime Minister Harker rose to power in the last days of WW2/WoZ Britain.  She was supportive of Dirk Brannigan’s vow to retake London from the zombie hordes and replied harshly to the opposition’s critique of the mission.

“There is no glory in hiding from our enemies, gentlemen.   It is not in our nature, nor in our history to cower in fear from those that threaten our way of life.  If we wish to reclaim our country, the heart of our Empire, we must be prepared to rip it from the hands from of our undead countrymen without mercy or quarter.”

To follow up on these words, she was the first politician back in the House of Commons.  The most famous picture of the age was Prime Minister Harker shaking the hand of her long time friend, Captain Brannigan on the steps of Sovereign’s tower.  She spearheaded an act for parliamentarians to be able to carry weapons in order to defend themselves from any remaining zombies in the estate.  Prime Minister Harker herself carried a silver rapier and held the parliamentary zombie-beheading record in 1945, garnering her the nickname, the Silver Lady.  The only negative side of this policy was the increase in duelling among MPs.

After Prime Minister George Pegg stepped down, Prime Minister Harker was the natural choice to lead the Labour-Liberal Party and won a landside victory over the Conservatives, of which half the party refused to take their seats until the zombie threat was truly ended.  Though young, she has received the confidence in a nation, looking to move past the zombie threat and onward to the future.

Soft spoken and reserved, the Silver Lady has been described as “tougher than steel” by friends and foes alike.  Commanding respect and authority all over Europe and the World, she is a powerful figure in the fight against evil, in all it’s many forms.
